Opening a web folder in Windows or Mac OSX

I'm sorry that you can't open a folder view of your files in this site. However, if your computer is running on Windows XP, Vista, or Mac you can open the folder in a separate window.
Here's how...

Windows XP

    • Go to My Computer, and click on the My Network Placeslink.
    • On the left, under Network Tasks, click Add a Network Place
    • Click Next, "Choose another network location" and then Next again.
    • You should now be presented with a box, asking you for an internet or network address. The address to type in depends on your username.
    • If you are a student, type https://myfiles.bolton.ac.uk/students/usr1nme where 'usr1nme' is your username.
    • If you are a member of staff, type https://myfiles.bolton.ac.uk/staff/usr5 where 'usr5' is your username.
    • If you are a member of staff, to access the L drive type https://myfiles.bolton.ac.uk/staff-shared.
    • Click next, next and finish. You may have to enter your username and password twice.

  • Windows Vista

    • Open the Computer folder
    • Right-click in the background and select "Add a Network Location"
    • Click Next, then 'Choose a custom network location. Click Next again.
    • After clicking next, you will be asked for your username and password. Enter your university username (on its own, without any \s or @s) and password.
    • The box will probably pop up again. Enter your username and password again, on its own
    • Keep doing this. You may have to enter your username and password upto 4 times. This is beacuse Windows Vista is really, really secure.
    • It's not really. It's just forgetful. Now you should be able to open your web folder.
    • You might have to enter your username and password one more time, just to be sure.

  • Mac OSX

    • From your Desktop, click on Go, then Connect To Server.
    • Now type in the appropriate path in the Connect To Server dialog box:
    • If you are a student, type https://myfiles.bolton.ac.uk/students/usr1nme where 'usr1nme' is your username.
    • If you are a member of staff, type https://myfiles.bolton.ac.uk/staff/usr5 where 'usr5' is your username.
    • If you are a member of staff, to access the L drive type https://myfiles.bolton.ac.uk/staff-shared.
    • Click Connect. You may be presented with a box asking you to verify the certificate. Press Continue.
    • Type your username and password in the next box, and click OK.
    • All being well, you should be presented with the Web folder box with all your files in it. Enjoy!Webfolder on a Mac

  • If the connection is successful, you will see a web folder view of your M: drive. You can return to this folder at any time by clicking on the link in My Network Places.

Remember, don't open files straight from this folder. If there is a problem with your connection, any changes you make could be lost. Many programs don't work well opening documents from web folders.

Opening Documents From Your Web Folder

To open a file once your web folder is connected, drag it to another folder on your computer, like My Documents.

Dragging files from your web folder to my documents

Double-click the local copy of your file to open it

Once you have finished working on your copy of the document, drag it back to the Web Folder to save it to your M: drive.

Working with documents in this way saves having to enter your username and password again, and makes opening and working with them quicker.
